Reverse osmosis is a membrane separation technique that removes large molecules and ions from solutions. It uses a semi-permeable membrane that lets the fluid flow through while dissolved solids stay behind. By applying transmembrane pressure a fluid containing a lower concentration will diffuse through the membrane into the fluids containing a higher concentration of dissolved solids, leaving water that is free of solids on the other side of the membrane.
Reverse osmosis is mainly applied during drinking water preparation and for the production of ultra pure water for the pharmaceutical industries and boiler feed water.
